ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Kevin Lynch scored his second goal of the game less than three minutes into overtime to give the Michigan Wolverines a 3-2 win over the UNO Mavericks in the opening round of the NCAA Division I men's ice hockey west regional. The loss ended the Mavericks season at 21-16-2.
The goal was declared after a lengthy video review of more than 10 minutes. On the play, Lynch threw the puck in front of the UNO net, and it hit one of the Mavericks and bounced back toward the goal. Goaltender #John Faulkner# appeared to have kept the puck from completely crossing the goal line, but it was ruled a goal.
The Wolverines advance to the regional final against the winner of the Boston College/Colorado College game in the other regional semifinal. Michigan earned the win after erasing a 2-0 deficit.
UNO nearly had the game won when they earned a powerplay in the first 17 seconds of overtime, but defenseman Jon Merrill blocked a shot by #Brock Montpetit# in the crease that would have been the game-winning goal.
The Mavericks opened the scoring just 1:35 into the game when Joey Martin sprung Rich Purslow on a shorthanded breakaway. Purslow slipped a backhander between the pads of Michigan goalie Shawn Hunwick for his 13th goal of the season.
UNO doubled its lead off an offensive zone faceoff. #Ryan Walters fired a pass out of the left-wing corner to Alex Hudson# who snapped the puck between Hunwick and the right post. UNO held a 2-0 lead after one.
It took little time for Michigan to get on the board in the second period. With Matt Ambroz in the penalty box, Louie Caporusso got loose in the slot and snapped a shot past Faulkner to make it 2-1.
The Wolverines tied the game at 8:36. Chad Langlais spun away from a check along the right-wing wall and sent a pass across to Lynch who wired home a one-timer for his 10th goal of the year.
Faulkner finished the game with 34 saves while Hunwick earned the win with 27.
