BEMIDJI, Minn. – The UNO Mavericks got three goals in the third period to pull away for a 5-1 win over Bemidji State on Saturday at the Sanford Center.
Terry Broadhurst had a pair of goals, including the game winner, to lead the attack.
The win ended a seven-game winless streak against Bemidji State and improved the Mavericks' record to 6-5-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the WCHA. The Beavers dipped to 4-7-1 overall and 2-5-1 in league play.
Holding a 2-1 lead entering the third period, the Mavericks got some breathing room when Broadhurst took a pinpoint pass from Alex Hudson and rammed home his second goal of the night. The powerplay tally was his team-leading 11th goal of the year.
Bemidji State gambled, pulling goaltender Dan Bakala for an extra attacker with just under four minutes remaining, but the move backfired when
Josh Archibald picked up a loose puck and fired it into the empty net to make it 4-1.
Brent Gwidt completed the scoring when he tapped in the rebound of a shot by Archibald just 56 seconds later.
The Mavericks weathered two early penalty kills and opened the scoring later in the first period when Gwidt set up
Jaycob Megna. He wired a shot over the shoulder of Bakala for his first collegiate goal.
Bemidji State tied the game early in the second period when Jamie MacQueen tipped a shot by Brad Hunt. The puck trickled past UNO's
John Faulkner at 5:24.
The Mavs answered back with the two teams skating four on four.
Ryan Walters sprang Broadhurst and he beat Bakala with a long wrist shot.
UNO outshot Bemidji State, 41-21. It was the fifth time in the last seven games that the Mavs had registered 40 or more shots on goal.
The Mavericks continue their four-game road trip next weekend when they visit Denver for games on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 18 and 19.
