MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Badgers raced out to a 3-0 lead and held on for a 6-3 win over the UNO Mavericks on Saturday night at the Kohl Center. The win gave the Badgers a split of the weekend series.
UNO is now 4-4-0 on the year and 3-1-0 in the WCHA while the Badgers improved to 4-4-0 and 3-3-0 in the league. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Mavs against UW.
The Mavericks return home to host #3 Colorado College on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4 and 5.
Like the previous night, the Mavericks spotted the Badgers a 3-0 lead. Mark Zengerle scored shorthanded at 7:52, and Matt Paape and Zengerle scored 25 seconds apart later to open the gap.
UNO got one back when
Terry Broadhurst created a turnover, catching goalie Joel Rumpel out of his net. Alex Hudson then set up Broadhurst for his team-leading seventh goal of the year to make it 3-1.
But with Hudson off in the last minute of the period on an interference minor, Frankie Simonelli scored a powerplay goal to give the Badgers a 4-1 lead after one.
The Badgers tacked on another goal in the second period when Michael Mersch set up Ryan Little at 3:03. In spite of outshooting the Badgers 15-4 in the period, UNO could not close the gap and trailed by four at the second break.
UNO conjured visions of yet another comeback in the third when Alex Hudson scored a powerplay goal at 3:50 to make it 5-2.
Bryce Aneloski then cashed in on another power play with UNO enjoying a six-on-four advantage as goalie
John Faulkner was pulled for an extra skater. The goal, Aneloski's first of the year, made it 5-3 with five minutes remaining.
But Jefferson Dahl hit the empty net with less than two minutes remaining to seal the win for Wisconsin.
Matt White finished with three assists while
Jayson Megna had two. The Mavericks outshot Wisconsin 42-24.
