OMAHA, Neb. – #Joey Martin and Terry Broadhurst# each had two goals to power the UNO hockey team to a 4-3 win over the Michigan Wolverines on Friday night at Qwest Center Omaha. The Mavericks snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Wolverines in the process, and UNO's seniors got their first ever win against their visitors.
The Mavericks improve to 15-12-6 on the year. They move ahead of Michigan and into a tie for fourth place with Alaska in the CCHA with a record of 11-11-3-2. Michigan falls to fifth place with a record of 17-14-1 overall and 12-10-1-0 in the CCHA. The two teams will square off again on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. It will be UNO's final regular season CCHA home game.
The win did not come easily for the Mavs. Leading 4-2 entering the third period, Michigan's Steve Kampfer scored a goal at 8:54 to trim UNO's advantage. But #John Faulkner# made some key saves down the stretch as the Mavs survived a penalty-filled final period.
The Wolverines broke on top on a powerplay goal from Chris Brown at 7:21 of the first period, but the Mavs came right back. Just 1:15 later, Martin forced a turnover and beat goalie Bryan Hogan with a backhander to knot the game at one.
Martin broke the tie at 10:52 when his centering pass caromed into the Michigan net off the stick of defenseman Tristan Llewellyn for his ninth goal of the year.
The Mavericks stretched their lead on the power play. Martin carried the puck down the right wing and threw it across to Broadhurst who knocked home his tenth goal of the year.
Michigan closed to within a goal early in the second period on a tally by Louie Caporusso, but the Mavs responded on another power play. #Eric Olimb#'s point shot was blocked, but the puck ricocheted to Broadhurst who fired in his second goal of the game past a helpless Hogan to make it 4-2 after two.
Broadhurst has now scored six goals in the last three games, all on the powerplay.
The game also marked UNO's first win against Michigan at the Qwest Center. They had been 0-5-1 against the Wolverines prior to the win.
Faulkner earned his eleventh victory with 29 saves while Hogan made 27 in the loss.
