Michigan Completes Sweep, Tops UNO 4-2

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Mavericks got off to a fast start Saturday, putting the fourth-ranked Michigan Wolverines in an early two-goal hole. But the Wolverines scored four consecutive goals that went unanswered to steal a 4-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association win and complete the weekend sweep of UNO at the Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Sophomores #Joey Martin and Rich Purslow# provided the scoring punch for the Mavericks, each picking up first-period goals while senior goalie #Jerad Kaufmann# did his part, stopping 36 shots on the night. But it wasn't enough as Saturday's game ended similar to Friday's with UM scoring the final four goals to pull away from UNO and seal the win.

UNO is now winless in its last eleven games, tying a school record for the longest such streak that dates back to the 2003-04 season. The Mavericks record is now even on the year at 13-13-7 overall and 8-11-7-3 in CCHA.

It appeared as though Saturday's contest would be a complete reversal of Friday's with the Mavericks flipping the script on the Wolverines and jumping out to an early two-goal lead. UNO took advantage of a five-minute major penalty against Michigan, and another two-minute minor, when Martin batted a puck out of midair and past UM goalkeeper Billy Sauer for a five-on-three power-play goal at 9:50 of the opening period to put UNO on top. Purslow followed that by picking up his second goal in as many games thirty seconds later, netting another power-play goal at 10:20 to push the UNO lead to 2-0.

Michigan fought its way back into things in the second. The Wolverines cut the UNO lead in half at the 15:04 mark of the second period on a Travis Turnbull power-play score. UM's Brian Lebler's goal at 16:44 squared the game at 2-2 heading into the second intermission.

UNO and Michigan battled back-and-forth in the third, each team trying to put in the go-ahead goal. But in the end, it was Michigan that gained the upper hand. Freshman Luke Glendening skated through traffice down the slot and beat Kaufmann to put the Wolverines up 3-2 at 15:32 of the final period. Michigan would add an empty-netter at 19:25 to seal the victory and complete the series sweep.

The Mavericks return home next weekend, Feb. 20-21, and will wrap up their 2008-09 conference schedule with a two-game series against Notre Dame at the Civic Auditorium. Both games are set for 7:05 p.m. face-offs. Friday's game will be televised live on NET and CBS College Sports.
