OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO hockey team earned a weekend sweep of Central Collegiate Hockey Association foe Michigan State on Saturday night, winning 3-1 at Qwest Center Omaha. The Mavericks improved to 9-2-1 on the year, 5-2-1-1 in CCHA play while the Spartans lost their sixth straight to drop to 4-8-2, 2-6-2-2 in the CCHA.
#
Tomas Klempa and Nick Fanto# scored third-period goals to snap a 1-1 tie and send the Mavericks to their third consecutive win. It was also the first time the Mavs had swept a CCHA opponent at home since January of 2007 against Northern Michigan.
Klempa earned his goal 5:44 into the third. He took a rink-wide feed from #
Eddie DelGrosso# and roared in on Spartan goalie Drew Palmisano, a former Omaha Lancer. Klempa's quick wrist shot beat the freshman netminder to make it 2-1.
Fanto got the insurance goal late in the period. He collected a lob pass from #
Eric Olimb# behind the Michigan State defensemen. He cut across the slot and waited for Palmisano to commit before firing a hard wrist shot past him at 16:25.
Saturday's rematch was a far cry from the opener to the weekend when the Mavericks routed the Spartans, 7-1. After a scoreless first period, #
Jordan Willert# got the Mavs on the board with his second goal of the season at 5:39 of the second.
Michigan State answered in the final minute of the stanza while on the powerplay. Matt Schepke jammed the puck past goalie #
Jerad Kaufmann# to tie the score.
The Mavericks continue to build on the best start in program history. Last season, the Mavericks did not earn their ninth victory until January 6th against Western Michigan. Kaufmann continues to impress in goal. He's now 6-0-0, the best start ever by a Maverick netminder.
UNO returns to action next weekend when the team travels to Ohio to face Ohio State on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 28 and 29.
