Mavericks Drop Bisons, 5-0

OMAHA, Neb. - Senior #Dan Charleston and sophomore Joey Martin# each recorded a goal and an assist to lead the University of Nebraska at Omaha hockey team to a 5-0 exhibition win over the University of Manitoba on Monday night at Qwest Center Omaha.

The Mavericks started the offensive attack early, scoring just four minutes into the contest on a goal by #JJ Koehler#. Freshmen #Jake Skjodt and Ryan Kretzer# were each credited the assists on the play.

UNO, the nation's top power-play unit from a year ago, scored its second goal of the evening via the man advantage. Charleston set Martin up with a one-timer, extending the UNO lead to 2-0. The Mavericks capped off their first period onslaught with a #Nick Von Bokern# marker at 14:08. Martin and freshman #John Kemp# picked up the helpers on the tally.

The second period featured an offensive barrage as each team unloaded 11 shots on goal. Freshman #Matt Smith# scored the period's only goal at the 15 minute mark, taking a pass from Skjodt and beating Manitoba's goalkeeper, Gavin McHale.

Charleston put the finishing touches on the game for the Mavs, finding the back of the net at 15:14 in the final frame. Sophomore #Rich Purslow and junior Jeric Agosta# were awarded with the assists on the play.

All three of UNO's goalkeepers saw action.  Senior #Jerad Kaufmann got the start and victory stopping all four shots on goal in the first period. The second period opened with junior goaltender Jermie Dupont# between the pipes. Dupont faced the most shots of the three goalies, stopping all eleven of the Bisons' shots. Freshman #John Faulkner# preserved the shutout in the final frame, making six saves in his UNO debut.

UNO controlled the puck most of the match, out-shooting Manitoba 35-21, including a dominating 16-4 edge after the first 20 minutes of play. The Bisons had opportunites to draw closer to UNO with 10 power plays but were unable to get anything past the Mavericks trio of goalies.

The Mavericks will open their regular season this weekend when they host the ninth annual Mutual of Omaha Stampede, Oct. 17-18. The Mavs will face American International on Friday at 7:05 p.m. and depending on the outcome, will play either Quinnipiac or Union on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. in the consolation game or at 7:05 p.m. in the title game.
