KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Omaha softball team wrapped up play in the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic in Kissimmee, Fla. on Sunday morning against the College of Charleston. The Mavericks fell to the Cougars, 5-1.
UNO is now 4-6 on the season, while the College of Charleston improved to 4-5.
Omaha had the first scoring chance of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Lizzie Noble walked and moved to second on Campbell Ditto's single. College of Charleston starter Samantha Martin was able to retire the next three UNO batters to get out of the inning.
The Cougars got on the scoreboard when Kelly Sinclair hit a two-out solo homerun.
Lia Mancuso walked to start the bottom of the third forcing Martin out of the game. Relief pitcher Sydney Shipley retired the next three batters to prevent any damage.
College of Charleston added three runs on three hits in the top of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. The big hit of the inning came on Rebecca Mueller's two-run home run off of Omaha starter Laura Roecker.
In the fifth inning, Nicole Warren worked a two-out walk for the Mavericks. Kelly Pattison singled to center to give UNO a pair of base runners. Sydney Hames roped a double to left field moving Pattison to third and scoring Warren. Shipley settled down and retired the next Omaha batter.
The Cougars added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to make the final score, 5-1.
Hames had a double and an RBI to lead Omaha at the plate. Ditto, Pattison, and Warren each had singles.
Roecker pitched 5.2 innings and took the loss for Omaha. The freshman allowed four runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Abbie Clanton pitched the final 1.1 innings allowing one run on two hits.
The Mavericks return to the diamond at the ASU Hornet tournament on Friday, April 26 in Montgomery, Ala. Omaha squares off against Akron at 2 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. game against Eastern Kentucky.
