ST. PAUL, Minn. — Ava Rongisch drove in four runs and
Katherine Johnson added three RBIs as Omaha Softball cruised to a 10-2 win in six innings over St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon.
Omaha (26-7, 8-0 Summit League) has won 10 straight and will go for the series sweep at noon Sunday.
Omaha scored single runs in the first two innings for a 2-0 lead. Johnson singled home a run in the first inning, and then
Sammy Schmidt scored in the second after the Mavericks loaded the bases with no outs.
St. Thomas (24-12, 5-3) scored on a two-out single in the third to pull within 2-1. Prior to that, Omaha had held opponents scoreless for 28 consecutive innings as the Mavericks had recorded four straight shutouts.
That, however, was as close as it got. Three of Rongisch's RBIs came during a six-run fourth inning when Omaha seized command.
The left fielder led off the inning with her fourth home run of the season. Omaha then scored the final five runs of the inning with two outs.
Johnson made it 5-1 with a two-run single up the middle. She now has a team-best 40 RBIs this season.
Johnson later scored when Schmidt drew a bases-loaded walk, and Rongisch capped the rally with a two-run single to left field.
Omaha tacked on two more in the sixth. Pinch hitter
Haley Wilwerding hit an RBI double to right field, and two batters later she scored on a Rongisch groundout.
Nine Mavericks scored runs on the day, as
Marra Cramer finished with two hits and two runs scored.
In the circle,
Alexis Wiggins picked up her team-leading 11th victory while throwing her fourth complete game. Wiggins scattered five hits and struck out one.
