ST. PAUL, Minn. — St. Thomas raced to a six-run lead and held on for a 7-5 win over Omaha Softball on Sunday.
Omaha had its 10-game winning streak snapped, but the Mavericks did take two of three games from the Tommies in the weekend series. Omaha (26-8) leads the Summit League standings with an 8-1 record, while St. Thomas (25-12) is second at 6-3.
St. Thomas led 6-0 after two innings. The Tommies hit a three-run home run in the first inning, then a one-out RBI triple triggered a three-run rally in the second inning.
Omaha scored all its runs in the top of the third.
The first four Mavericks reached base in the third as Katherine Johnson's single made it 6-1. After a sacrifice fly from Alyson Edwards, Sammy Schmidt delivered a two-run triple.
Ava Rongisch followed with an RBI single to left field to make it 6-5. But Omaha didn't have another baserunner the rest of the afternoon as St. Thomas pitcher Ella Cook retired the last 13 batters she faced.
St. Thomas added an insurance run with a home run in the bottom of the sixth.
Taylor Sedlacek had two of Omaha's six hits on the day. In the circle, Maddia Groff, who threw a two-hit shutout against St. Thomas on Friday, allowed nine hits Sunday and took the loss.
Omaha returns home to face South Dakota State at 6 p.m. CT Friday, kicking off the final homestand of the regular season.
