OMAHA, Neb. – Alberta scored a goal late in the third period and held on to beat the Omaha hockey team, 3-2, in an exhibition game on Saturday night. The game was the season opener for the Mavericks.
On the winning goal, Tyson Baillie poked the puck away from
Austin Ortega at the Alberta blue line, setting Stephane Legault free. Legault beat freshman
Kris Oldham with a low shot at 14:04 to complete the Golden Bears' comeback from a 2-0 deficit.
The Mavericks opened the scoring just 4:22 in the game.
Fredrik Olofsson stole the puck from an Alberta defenseman, walked in and slipped the puck between the pads of goaltender Kenny Cameron.
UNO doubled its lead exactly three minutes later. Just as his team's penalty kill expired,
Jake Randolph fired a sharp pass from his own zone that set
Mason Morelli free on a breakaway. He snapped a hard shot over the glove hand of Cameron.
Alberta got on the board with a powerplay goal at 12:58 when the puck seemed to bounce in off the back of goaltender
Evan Weninger. Rhett Rachinski got credit for the goal.
Then late in the first, Luke Philp tied the game when he worked a nifty move to get free for a shot that beat Weninger at 18:55.
Oldham made seven saves in the loss as all three UNO goaltenders played. Weninger made six saves in the first period while
Alex Blankenburg stopped all eight shots he faced in the second.
The Mavericks play their first NCAA games on the season beginning Friday, Oct. 14 when they play Alaska Anchorage in the first game of the Brice Alaska Goal Rush in Fairbanks.
