Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – The No. 3 Omaha Mavericks historic season came to an end on Thursday, losing to Providence, 4-1, in the semifinals of the 2015 NCAA Frozen Four.
The Mavericks, who finished the season at 20-13-6, were denied a chance to play for a national championship in their first-ever trip to the Frozen Four.
UNO trailed 2-0 entering the third period but got on the board at 10:46 when
Jake Guentzel snapped home a pass from
Tyler Vesel from the low slot. The goal, Guentzel's career-best 14th of the year, gave the Mavericks some life after battling a determined Providence team that had given up few offensive to that point.
But the Friars seized back the momentum just 24 seconds later when Trevor Mingoia beat
Ryan Massa off a centering pass from Mark Jankowski to make it 3-1.
Nick Saracino scored an empty net goal at 19:29 to cap off a three-point night.
Providence carried the play in the first period, outshooting the Mavericks, 16-9. It also had the best scoring chances. Massa stopped a point-bank bid from Mingoia early and later benefited from the iron when a sharp-angle shot from Brandon Tanev hit the post.
The Friars finally broke through in the second when Noel Acciari found a loose puck in the UNO crease and knocked it past Massa at 11:02.
They doubled their lead less than four minutes later when Jankowski took a pass from Saracino and lifted a quick wrist shot past Massa.
Massa finished with 44 saves, the second-highest total in his career, as the Friars outshot the Mavericks, 48-26. The 48 shots allowed by UNO were the second-highest total this season.
Massa finished the season with a record of 14-8-6, a career high for wins in a season.
Guentzel finished the season as the Mavericks' leading scorer with 14 goals and 25 assists for 39 points.
The team set a school record for fewest losses in a season, beating the old mark by two.
The Mavericks now will look ahead to making new history when they move into the new UNO/Community Arena in October of this year.
