Austin Ortega set a school record with his seventh game-winning goal of the season as the Omaha hockey team rallied for a 2-1 overtime win over New Hampshire on Tuesday night.
Ortega gathered up a deflected pass from
Tyler Vesel and slid a shot underneath goaltender Adam Clark with 1:15 remaining in overtime. The goal moved Ortega into a tie with Miami's Sean Kuraly for the national lead in game winners.
The goal capped another comeback win for the Mavericks who trailed 1-0 after two periods but won for the 12th time this season to equal the best start in school history at 12-4-3. New Hampshire fell to 5-11-1. The series concludes with a special 4:07 p.m. face-off on Wednesday.
Ortega moved past Andrew Wong (2000-01) and
Josh Archibald (2013-14) in setting the new school record for game winners in a season.
New Hampshire jumped into the lead just 3:12 into the game. Grayson Downing stole the puck and curled behind the net. He fed the puck to Casey Thrush whose first shot was stopped by
Kirk Thompson. Thrush chipped in his own rebound for his second goal of the year.
The Mavericks knotted the game just 1:02 into the third period. Vesel carried down the left wing and got off a shot. The rebound was scooped up by
Jake Randolph who walked in and fired a shot between Clark and the near post for his fourth goal of the year.
Brian O'Rourke also picked up an assist.
Thompson finished with 28 saves, several in the waning minutes of the third to preserve the 1-1 tie. He is now 3-1-0 this season. Clark turned aside 31 as the Mavericks outshot the Wildcats, 33-29.
It was Omaha's first overtime win of the season and their fifth one-goal win of the year, improving to 5-2-0.
