Wildcats Complete Sweep of Mavericks, 5-2

Box Score DURHAM, N.H. – New Hampshire erupted for four goals in 4:30 to race past the Omaha hockey team, 5-2, on Saturday night at the Whittemore Center Arena on Saturday night.

The loss dropped the Mavericks dropped to 8-9-1 overall while UNH improved to 12-10-1 in handing the Mavs just their second series sweep of the year.

The Mavericks broke a 1-1 tie early in the third period when Ryan Walters fired home a pass from Michael Young during a four-on-three power play.  It was his fifth goal of the year, all of them coming on the power play.

UNH, which had been held scoreless on four previous power plays, finally cashed in when Matt Willows one-timed a pass from Kevin Goumas past UNO goalie Kirk Thompson at 13:46 to tie the game at two.

Willows delivered the game winner just 1:42 later when his wrist shot from the left wing trickled in off the glove of Thompson.

Nick Sorkin added another goal 1:08 later, and Willows completed the hat trick with an empty net goal at 18:16 to end the scoring outburst.

The four goals allowed in the third period were the most by the Mavericks this season.

UNH outshot the Mavericks 17-9 in the third and 36-29 for the game.  Thompson took the loss with 30 saves while Casey DeSmith turned aside 27 for the Wildcats.

Josh Archibald, who had two goals in Friday's 6-3 loss, opened the scoring for the second night in a row when he scored his NCHC-leading 14th goal of the season.  He converted a pass from Dominic Zombo who was stationed at the side of the UNH net.  Walters picked up the other assist.

Scoring chances were hard to come by in the first period as each team managed just six shots.

New Hampshire tied the game early in the second period.  Casey Thrush took advantage of a turnover and knocked in his second goal of the weekend at 1:52.

UNO finished the non-conference portion of its schedule with a record of 3-7-0.

The Mavericks will play their first home games since late November next week when they host Minnesota Duluth on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 10-11.
