JACKSON, Miss. - The UNO softball team swept Evansville in a doubleheader on Sunday, 9-1 (6 inn.) and 3-2, to capture the Jackson State Tournament title with a perfect 4-0 record.
The Mavs (13-1) have now won five in a row and have taken two tournament titles in three tries so far this season. UNO will head to the Colorado State Classic next weekend in Fort Collins, Colo.
UNO 9, Evansville 1 (6 inn.)
Evansville (1-7) scored its lone run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, but it was all UNO from there.
Dana Elsasser (8-1) pitched 6.0 innings and allowed one earned run on six hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
The Mavs tied it 1-1 in the top of the third on an RBI single by
Amber Lutmer to score
Tara Trede.
UNO broke it open in the top of the fourth with five runs.
Sydney Hames led off with a double and pinch-runner
Tania Carroll advanced to third on an error, which also put
Mara Eeman on first. Eeman was caught stealing second, but Trede hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Carroll to make it 2-1.
Allie Mathewson doubled, followed by an RBI double by
Lindsay Redding.
Campbell Ditto then tripled home Redding and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-1. Lutmer capped the scoring with a solo home run.
The Mavericks scored twice more in the top of the fifth to make it 8-1. Trede scored on a fielding error, and Redding notched an RBI single to score Mathewson.
Mathewson, Redding and Lutmer each had two hits. Redding and Lutmer had a pair of RBIs each. The Mavs outhit Evansville, 11-6, and six different Mavs had an extra-base hit.

Ashton Hughes threw a shutout through 6.2 innings, and
Amber Lutmer's two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning boosted the Mavs to their fourth win of the weekend in as many tries.
Sydney Hames drove in
Molly Negrete in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead. Hughes, earning her first start of the season, got some defensive help with a double play by
Tara Trede in the top of the seventh for two outs. But the Purple Aces (1-8) put runners on the corners with two outs in their final at bat, and
Dana Elsasser came in to close the game for the Mavs.
After Elsasser walked a batter to load the bases, Evansville's Kendall Kautz came up with a two-run single to pull within 3-2 and put runners on first and second. But Elsasser got Kacey Rogers to pop up to Trede to end the game.
Hughes picked up the win to improve to 2-0. She completed 6.2 innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits and six walks with four strikeouts. UNO outhit Evansville, 6-4.
