OMAHA, Neb. – The U.S. Under-18 Team scored two goals in the third period to beat the Omaha hockey team, 3-2, in an exhibition game at the CenturyLink Center on Saturday.
Trailing 2-1 entering the third period, Team USA tied the game at 8:16 when Keaton Thompson wired a shot just under the crossbar for his fourth goal of the season.
Just 1:28 later, Team USA picked up the winner. Evan Allen fired home the rebound of a shot by Tyler Kelleher, beating
John Faulkner who started the third period in relief of
Ryan Massa who started his first game in almost a year.
Faulkner made several tough saves later in the third to keep the Mavs within one. But Team USA outshot UNO 16-3 in the third and 45-17 for the game to squelch any UNO comeback.
The Mavericks opened the scoring at 11:43 of the first period.
Ryan Walters raced down the left wing and threw a pass in front that
Zahn Raubenheimer tapped past goaltender Thatcher Demko.
Team USA tied the game while shorthanded. J.T. Compher forced a giveaway along the left-wing wall in the UNO zone and cut to the net. Massa stopped the first shot, but Dawson Cook raced in and flipped home the rebound.
UNO retook the lead late in the first. Nick Seeler fired a shot from the left point that hit the skate of a defender.
Dominic Zombo pounced on the rebound and backhanded it home to make it 2-1.
Massa made 28 saves and allowed one goal while Faulkner finished with 14, allowing two goals.
Both teams finished 0-for-3 on the power play.
The Mavericks play their final home games of the regular season on Friday and Saturday, March 1-2 when they host Wisconsin.
