Wolverines Hold Off Mavericks, 4-3

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha hockey team fell just short of its second straight come-from-behind effort, losing 4-3 to No. 2 Michigan on Saturday night at the CenturyLink Center.

The loss gave the Mavericks a split of the series after a 3-2 win on Friday that included two third-period goals to win it.  UNO is now 6-6-0 this season while Michigan improved to 7-2-1.

Trailing 3-2 entering the period, the Mavericks peppered Wolverines' goalie Steve Racine in search of the equalizer.  The Mavericks had a 22-9 advantage in shots in the period and finally tied the game on a power play at 13:03.  Brock Montpetit scooped up the rebound of a shot by Jake Guentzel and roofed it over Racine for his sixth goal of the year.

But just 50 seconds later, Michigan dumped the puck into the UNO zone.  It hit a Maverick defenseman and fluttered on goal.  UNO netminder Reed Peters, in his first collegiate start, got a pad on the puck but couldn't gather the rebound.  Michigan's Derek DeBlois pounced on it and fired it home for the game winner.

Peters finished with 27 saves while Racine made 40 saves as the Mavericks finished with a 43-31 shot advantage.

Michigan took the first lead of the game on a power play just 1:54 into the second.  “Boo” Nieves set up Andrew Copp to make it, 1-0.

Less than two minutes later, the Wolverines doubled their lead when Phil Di Giuseppe stole the puck at center ice and raced back into the Mavericks' zone, slipping a shot around Peters at 3:43.

The Mavericks countered a minute and a half later.  Working the puck along the right wing, Justin Parizek dug the puck out for James Polk who bulled his way to the net and fired a shot past Racine.

Another center ice turnover cost the Mavericks when JT Compher came away with a loose puck and started a two-on-oh.  Compher kept the puck and slipped it past Peters' outstretched pad for a shorthanded goal at 13:39.

Again, the Mavericks responded quickly.  Just 30 seconds later, Brian O'Rourke took a pass from Brian Cooper across the blue line and threw a shot on goal that eluded Racine who appeared to be screened on the play.

UNO has now played in seven one-goal games, posting a record of 4-3-0 in those games.

The Mavericks finish their home stand by hosting Miami on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22 and 23.
