Box Score OMAHA, Neb. –
Josh Archibald scored a highlight reel goal in the third period to power the Omaha hockey team to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over No. 2 Michigan on Friday night at the CenturyLink Center.
The win improved the Mavericks to 6-5-0 overall and 2-1-0 in their six-game home stand. The Wolverines lost for just the second time this season, falling to 6-2-1.
Trailing 2-1 entering the third period, UNO's checking line started the comeback.
Justin Parizek got free below the goal line and threw a centering pass to
Aaron Pearce who one-timed the puck past goalie Zach Nagelvoort at 2:58. For the sophomore Pearce, it was his first collegiate goal.
Just 3:03 later, the Mavericks got the winner. From the right wing in his own zone,
Brock Montpetit threw a rink-wide pass to Archibald who was in full stride up the boards. He blew around a Michigan defenseman, cut across the slot and beat Nagelvoort with a wrist shot for his team-leading ninth goal of the year. It also was his team-leading third game-winning goal.
Just minutes later, UNO goalie
Ryan Massa made the save of the game, stopping Tyler Motte on a breakaway after the Mavericks lost the puck at center ice.
Massa finished with 26 saves to earn his third straight win. He got plenty of help as the Mavericks had nine blocked shot in the third period and finished the game with 22.
Nagelvoort suffered just his second loss of the year, stopping 28 shots as the Mavs outshot the Wolverines, 31-28.
Each team managed eight shots in a scoreless but entertaining first period.
The Mavericks finally broke through during a five-on-three power play at 10:13.
Ryan Walters fed the puck to
Michael Young stationed at the top of the slot. Young wired a slap shot, and
Dominic Zombo tipped it past Nagelvoort for this fifth goal of the year.
Michigan used the power play to tie the game and take the lead. Just 3:03 apart, Luke Moffatt and J.T. Compher scored off slap shots from in close to give the Wolverines the edge.
The game drew a season-high crowd of 8,287.
The two teams conclude the series on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m.
