Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – Cornell scored three goals in the third period to come from behind and beat the Omaha hockey team, 5-3, on Friday night at the CenturyLink Center.
The Big Red made the most of eight power plays, scoring three times including twice in the third period, to win their season opener. The Mavericks fell to 2-3-0 on the season.
The Mavs led 3-2 entering the third period, but Cornell's Dustin Mowrey tied the game at 7:17.
Just 56 seconds later, with
Brock Montpetit in the penalty box for slashing, Cole Bardreau got free in the slot and fired a shot just under the crossbar to make it 4-3.
Brian Ferlin scored during a five-on-three power play with 1:23 remaining to ice the game.
Cornell broke the scoreless tie at 13:30 of the first period. Defenseman Joakim Ryan got free in the slot and zipped a wrist shot past UNO goaltender
Kirk Thompson for a powerplay goal.
The Mavericks tied the game with a last second effort reminiscent of a goal scored by
Brock Montpetit in a home series against Bentley two weeks earlier.
Tanner Lane converted a backhander off a scramble in front of the Cornell net with 0.2 seconds showing on the clock. It was his first goal of the season.
The Big Red retook the lead early in the second period when Joel Lowry pounced on a loose puck in the low slot and fired a shot past a helpless Thompson at 6:20.
The Mavericks tied the game on a penalty shot halfway through the game.
Josh Archibald was pulled down after slipping in behind the Cornell defense for a near breakaway. On the penalty shot, he fired a shot under the crossbar for this team-leading fourth goal of the year.
It was UNO's first penalty shot since February of 2008.
The Mavs have now surrendered seven powerplay goals in the last 18 shorthanded chances.
UNO held Cornell to just 20 shots, a season low for shots allowed in a game. Thompson made 15 saves in the loss.
The two teams finish the series on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
