TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The UNO baseball team completed its road series at Indiana State on Sunday, picking up a 7-4 victory in 12 innings at Bob Warn Field. In halting ISU's win streak at five games, the Mavericks improved to 12-32 on the year, while the Sycamores dropped to 34-11.
Nebraska Omaha pounded out a season-high 22 hits to ISU's seven for the day. Senior
Brady Hohl led the way, finishing 5-for-7 with a run scored and two more driven in. Senior
Colby McCord and freshman
Alex Mortensen each went 3-for-6, and Mortensen added two RBI and a run scored.
Freshman
Sam Raetz (1-0) earned the win in relief, throwing 2.1 hitless innings with two strikeouts and one walk. The loss went to Kyle Rupe (6-1), who gave up three runs on three hits with a strikeout over 0.2 innings of work. McCord captured his first save of the season, allowing no hits and striking out three batters in the bottom of the 12th inning.
Freshman
Cole Volkers threw five scoreless inning in his start, allowing just three hits with a trio of strikeouts. ISU's Ryan Torgerson gave up one run on 11 hits over six innings of work, striking out seven and walking no batters.
In the top of the second, UNO strung together four hits, using three straight to score their first run of the game. Senior
Scotty Donner singled to center, and senior
Andrew Reck reached with a bunt single to third, followed by Hohl's RBI single to center that plated Donner to make it 1-0.
Indiana State loaded the bases twice during the game but was unable to capitalize, limited to five hits through the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Koby Kraemer drew a leadoff walk and Owen Conway was hit by a pitch, and Jordan Pearson's sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. Pinch hitter Robby Ort then sent a two-run double to right, pushing the Sycamores ahead at 2-1.
Hohl led off the ninth with a bunt single, but ISU quelled the threat by turning a double play. Sophomore
Caleb Palensky then reached and advanced to second on two wild pitches, tying the game on senior
Mark Waldron's infield single, an unclaimed popup that dropped behind second base. With two outs, Mortensen delivered for UNO with a two-run homer to left for a 4-2 advantage.
Indiana State started the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back walks. With one out, Conway's two-run double off the wall in left center scored Kraemer and Kyle Burnam to tie the game at 4-4. A balk sent Conway, the potential winning run, to third, but Raetz entered the game in relief and got Ort swinging to take the game to extra innings.
In the top of the 12th, UNO plated three runs on four hits to regain the lead. Junior McCrite led off with a single to center, and
Donner's sacrifice bunt pushed him to second. Sophomore
Dylan McGill doubled down the left field line to score McCrite, spotting UNO a 5-4 lead. With two outs, Hohl chipped in an RBI single to right to make it 6-4. He then stole second and came across on McCord's RBI double to left center, making it 7-4.
In the bottom of the frame, McCord, who caught the first 11 innings, made just his second pitching appearance of the season. After an opening strikeout of Ort, the Sycamores drew two consecutive walks, but McCord tallied two more strikeouts of Lucas and Hedges to earn the save in UNO's 7-4 road win.
