SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The UNO softball team earned a 9-3, 13-2 (6 inn.) sweep over the Sioux Falls Cougars on Wednesday at Harmodon Fields.
Amber Lutmer led the Mavericks with four home runs total - two in each game. The Mavs improved to 19-13 on the season. Sioux Falls dropped to 12-14.
In game one, the Mavericks opened up a 6-0 lead by the fourth inning. Sioux Falls cut the lead in half with three runs in the fifth inning, but UNO responded with three more in the top of the sixth.
Lutmer's first homer of the day came in the third inning with
Lauren Larson on first.
Emma Wright also doubled home
Molly Negrete later in the inning for a 4-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, Lutmer smacked another home run with
Tonya Peterson and Larson on base for a 9-3 lead.
Dana Elsasser went the distance, allowing three runs on six hits. Elsasser struck out eight. Lutmer finished 2-for-4 with six RBIs. Peterson had two hits and scored two runs, as did Larson and Negrete.
In game two, Larson and Lutmer each tallied three hits and four RBIs. The Mavs hit four home runs in the game, two by Lutmer and one apiece by Larson and
Katelyn Hinton.
UNO opened with four runs in the first inning after a two-run homer by Larson and a two-run homer by Lutmer two batters later. Sioux Falls got two runs back in the bottom of the first, but Larson notched a two-run single in the second inning to open a 6-2 lead.
In the fifth, Hinton and Lutmer led off the inning with back-to-back solo home runs, and the Mavs tallied five runs in the sixth to break open an 11-run lead. Lutmer had an RBI single and Negrete and
Kiley Thalken each hit two-run singles in the sixth.
Kat Barrow picked up the win, allowing two runs on five hits through five innings. Barrow struck out nine and walked none.
Ashton Hughes pitched one inning of relief and allowed one hit.
The four home runs by Lutmer gave the reigning Great West Conference Co-Player of the Week nine home runs and 24 RBIs in her last seven games.
The Mavs and Cougars will play again on Saturday, as UNO hosts Sioux Falls in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Westside Field at Westbrook.
