COLUMBIA, Mo. – The UNO baseball team returned to action on Tuesday after a five-day break, falling 14-4 to Missouri at Taylor Stadium. With the loss, the Mavericks drop to 2-10 on the year, while the Tigers improve to 5-5.
Brett Graves (1-0) threw four scoreless innings for the win, surrendering four hits while striking out four and walking two. Senior
Andrew Reck (0-3) took the loss, giving up four runs, of which three were earned, while allowing six hits in the first two innings. Reck fanned two batters while walking one.
A pair of Papillion, Neb., natives led the way at the plate for UNO, as senior
Colby McCord went 4-for-4 and sophomore
Caleb Palensky finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and two more driven in.
Junior
Tyler Splichal also went 2-for-3 and scored once.
Missouri's Conner Mach finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI, while Blake Brown went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI of his own. Dane Opel added a 2-for-4 effort with three runs driven in, and Eric Garcia went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
Mizzou made quick work to open the game, taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first before tacking on another run in the second. The Tigers used a three-run fourth inning to extend their lead to 7-0.
Nebraska Omaha got on the board in the sixth, starting with freshman
Alex Mortensen's leadoff walk and Splichal's single to left. Junior
Connor McCrite's sacrifice bunt pushed both runners into scoring position, and Palensky's RBI groundout brought in Mortensen to make it 7-1.
MU then exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning, pushing it to 14-1.
UNO managed another run in the seventh, as freshman
Beau Suponchick led off with a single through the left side. McCord then delivered a double, and Suponchick later registered a run on senior
Mark Waldron's RBI groundout, leaving the tally at 14-2.
The Mavs added two more scores with two hits in the eighth, sparked by Splichal's leadoff single to left. Palensky sent a triple to right center to score Splichal, and Palensky later notched a run on a passed ball. Missouri's Jeff Cline finished the game on the mound, limiting the Mavs to one hit in the top of the ninth and leaving the final score at 14-4.
For the night, Missouri pounded out 14 hits and left eight runners on base, while UNO totaled 11 hits and had nine runners left on.
UNO returns to action March 9-10, traveling to Northern Colorado for a three-game series. First pitch in Friday's opener is set for 3 p.m. (CT), followed by a Noon doubleheader on Saturday in Greeley, Colo.
