IOWA CITY, Iowa – The UNO baseball team picked up its second win in two days on Wednesday, defeating Iowa 3-1 at Duane Banks Field. With the win, the Mavericks improve to 9-16 on the season, while the Hawkeyes drop to 9-12 (2-1 Big Ten).
The Maverick pitching staff starred, limiting Iowa to just four hits for the night. Starter
Andrew Reck (1-3) earned the win, allowing one run over six innings with three strikeouts and a walk. Freshman
Cole Volkers relieved Reck for one inning, striking out a pair of batters in the seventh. But it was redshirt freshman
Zach Williamsen who put it away for UNO, as he entered the game in the eighth with a no-outs, bases-loaded jam and went on to strike out the side. Williamsen held the Hawkeyes hitless over the last two innings and totaled a career-high-tying four Ks en route to his first career save.
The loss was tagged to Patrick Lala (0-2), who gave up one unearned run on one hit over 2.2 innings of relief. Lala struck out three and issued one walk.
Senior
Colby McCord finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and another driven in, while sophomore
Caleb Palensky went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Iowa got on the board first with its lone run in the first inning, when Mike McQuillan drew a leadoff walk and went on to score an unearned run on a UNO error.
The Mavericks tied it in the top of the third, opening with a single from freshman
Dylan McGill and a double down the right field line by senior
Brady Hohl. McCord's RBI infield single allowed McGill to score, knotting the score at 1-1.
Nebraska Omaha took the lead in the fifth, as McCord led off with a single to left. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a throwing error, then crossed the plate on Palensky's sacrifice fly to push UNO ahead 2-1.
The Mavs added an insurance run in the seventh, with Palensky delivering an RBI single through the left side that scored senior
Mark Waldron from second for the final score of 3-1.
UNO returns to action March 30 – April 1, facing future Summit League foe IPFW in Fort Wayne, Ind. Links to live stats and live audio will be available on OMavs.com.
