Mavs Extend Winning Streak with Sweep at Rebel Spr

UNO 2, Bucknell 0
UNO 2, Columbia 1 (8 inn.)

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The UNO softball team wrapped up play at the Rebel Spring Games Thursday with its fifth and sixth straight wins at the tournament.

The Mavs shut out Bucknell in the morning, 2-0, then topped Columbia 2-1 in eight innings in the afternoon. UNO (10-8) won its final six games in Florida after dropping two on its first day of competition. The Mavs have allowed just two runs combined in the last five games. UNO's shutout over Bucknell was its third in as many days.

UNO 2, Bucknell 0
Kat Barrow (4-3) picked up her first career shutout, throwing 7.0 innings with three hits allowed, eight strikeouts and one walk. All three Maverick pitchers have thrown a shutout in the past three days.

The Mavericks scored both of their runs in the top of the third inning. Tonya Peterson singled up the middle, and with two outs gone, Lauren Larson singled to center field, moving Peterson to second. Katelyn Hinton doubled to left center, scoring both Peterson and Larson for the only runs of the game.

Bucknell couldn't crack Barrow for the next three innings, striking out four times, popping up twice, flying out twice and lining out once. The Bison did lead off the sixth inning with two singles, but were forced out at third, then struck out and popped up, allowing Barrow to escape the jam unscathed.

UNO 2, Columbia 1 (8 inn.)
Lindsay Redding hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Mara Eeman. Eeman was placed on second in the bottom of the eighth because of the International tiebreaker rule. Emma Wright laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Eeman to third, then Redding provided the heroics with a single to left center.

Dana Elsasser stifled the Columbia hitters all day, allowing just two hits, one walk and no earned runs. Elsasser (5-4) struck out seven and has allowed just one earned run in her last four starts.

UNO took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Amber Lutmer that scored Tonya Peterson. Columbia tied the game in the top of the sixth, despite not getting a hit or a walk, thanks to two Maverick errors.

With runners on the corners and one out gone in the top of the eighth, Columbia was on the verge of taking the lead. But Elsasser shut the door, getting a groundout and pop up to end the threat.

Lutmer and Redding each finished 2-for-4 with one RBI apiece.

UNO will now return home to host its first game this season and first game at its new ballpark. The Mavs will open their new digs, Westside Field at Westbrook, on Tuesday, March 20 at 3 p.m. against Nebraska.
