GREELEY, Colo. – The UNO baseball team split a doubleheader at Northern Colorado on Saturday, winning the opener 8-1 before dropping a 13-12 heartbreaker in the final game. The Mavericks are now 3-12 on the year, while the Bears are 3-7.
Senior
Brady Hohl went 6-for-8 for the day, scoring four runs and driving in six with a double and two home runs to his credit. Senior
Colby McCord also went 4-for-8 with four runs and four RBI, adding three doubles and a homer.
GAME 1 – NEBRASKA OMAHA 8, NORTHERN COLORADO 1 (7 INN.)
In game one, Hohl went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and another driven in, as well as a career-best three stolen bases. Junior
Tyler Splichal (2-for-3) and sophomores
Caleb Palensky (2-for-3) and
Beau Suponchick (2-for-4) each finished with multiple-hit performances as well.
Freshman
Alex Mortensen also homered in his second straight game of the series with a solo bomb in the second, and junior
Scotty Donner delivered a two-run shot later in the frame.
As a team, Nebraska Omaha outhit the Bears 14-3 and put together an errorless game in the field.
Senior starter
Cory Buckley (1-2) earned his first win of the year, tossing a three-hitter over 5.1 innings of work while surrendering just one run. The Bellevue, Neb., native struck out five and walked four, tying his career mark for strikeouts.
Nate Steinmetz (1-2) took the loss for UNC, allowing six runs – of which five were earned – on nine hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
The Mavericks scored first with a three-run second inning, sparked by Mortensen's leadoff homer to left. Palensky then singled to right, and Donner smashed his two-run shot over the left field wall to make it 3-0. The Mavericks added one more in the third to take a solid 4-0 lead.
Northern Colorado tallied its only run of the game in the bottom of the inning, as Harrison Lambert opened with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a wild pitch. Dylan Banach's sacrifice fly to center scored Lambert, bringing it to 4-1.
UNO added three more runs in the fourth on four hits. Senior
Andrew Reck singled to left, advanced to third on two straight wild pitches, and was plated when Hohl delivered an RBI single through the left side. Hohl then stole second and senior
Colby McCord doubled to left, scoring Hohl. McCord was later driven in on Splichal's RBI single to right that made it 7-1.
The Mavs tacked on one more run in the sixth, when Hohl singled through the left side and swiped his third bag of the game. He then scored on Suponchick's single through the left side, giving UNO its final score of 8-1 for its third victory of the season.
GAME 2 – NORTHERN COLORADO 13, NEBRASKA OMAHA 12
In game two, Hohl shined again with a pair of two-run home runs, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a career-high-tying five RBI. McCord also went 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBI, and Mortensen chipped in a 3-for-5 effort while scoring in once and driving in one. Buckley added a 3-for-5 showing and one run scored, and Palensky also had a multi-hit game at 2-for-5 with one RBI.
UNC's Adrian Schenk went a perfect 5-for-5 with three runs scored, five RBI to match Hohl and a home run in the seventh.
Dan Talley (1-1) was credited with the win in relief, throwing the final 0.2 innings and keeping the Mavs hitless. Freshman
Dylan McGill (0-1) took the loss, allowing one run on three hits while facing six batters in the ninth inning.
UNO scored first in the contest, starting with a McCord double to left center and Mortensen's single through the left side. McCord came in on a wild pitch to give the Mavs a quick 1-0 lead.
In the second, Waldron led off with a single through the left side, and Donner reached on a fielder's choice to put two on base. Reck then singled to right to load the bases, and Hohl's sacrifice fly plated Waldron. McCord added a two-run double to center to bring Waldron and Donner across, pushing the advantage to 4-0.
In the bottom of the third, UNC mustered three runs on a trio of hits to cut the score to 4-3. The Bears chipped in another run with three hits in the third, tying the game at 4-4.
The Mavericks then exploded for four runs on four hits in the fourth, beginning with Buckley's leadoff double to left and Hohl's two-out, two-run homer to left that made it 6-4. McCord then drew a walk, and Mortensen sent a triple to center that scored McCord. Mortensen also came in on Palensky's RBI single up the middle, helping UNO regain the lead at 8-4.
Northern Colorado chipped away with a run in the fifth, after which UNO scored another in the sixth on McCord's solo roundtripper to left center. The Bears then posted a three-run sixth inning, creating a one-run ballgame at 9-8.
The Mavericks came back for a pair of runs in the seventh, with Donner singling up the middle and Hohl coming up later with his second two-run homer of the game, making it 11-8.
UNC looked to Schenk in the seventh, when he homered to cut the score to 11-9.
In the bottom of the eighth, Northern Colorado tied the game at 11-11. The Bears then took their first lead of the game at 12-11, when Tony Crudo's RBI single scored Schenk. UNO put up a score in the top of the ninth, when back-to-back singles by Waldron and Buckley put two on. Donner then reached on a UNC fielding miscue, which brought Waldron across and tied the game again at 12-12. With one out, the Bears elected to intentionally walk Hohl and load the bases, and they got out of the jam with an inning-ending double play.
Northern Colorado used its home team advantage in the ninth, as with one out and one on, Banach doubled down the line to put Ferguson at third. Kevin Hurd then walked, and Adam Hilker became the hero of the game with the game-winning RBI single to right center that scored Eric Ferguson and sealed UNC's win at 13-12.
The two squads combined for 36 hits in the contest, with UNO's 18 a season best, as well as five homers, with three from the Mavs.
UNO returns to action on Monday, March 12 for its first home contest, hosting BYU. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at CU Sports Complex. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students with free parking near the ballpark on the Creighton campus.
