Walters Leads Mavs Over Tigers, 5-3

Box Score Box Score

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Ryan Walters scored twice in the third period as the UNO Mavericks came from behind to beat Colorado College, 5-3, on Saturday night at World Arena.

UNO trailed 3-2 entering the third period, but Walters ignited the rally when he stole the puck from defenseman Gabe Guentzel and raced in on a breakaway.  He beat goalie Josh Thorimbert with a nifty backhander for a shorthanded goal that tied the game.

Walters struck again at 7:19 when he snapped a hard wrist shot inside the right post for his 10th goal of the year.  He's the fifth Maverick to score at least 10 goals this season.

Jayson Megna capped the roller coaster battle by scoring into the empty net with 40 seconds remaining.

With the win, the Mavericks improved to 14-12-6 overall and 11-8-5 in the WCHA.  They are now tied with Colorado College and North Dakota for fourth in the WCHA with 27 points.

The Mavericks controlled play in the first period to the tune of a 16-3 shot advantage.  Thorimbert made several saves to keep the Mavs at bay until the 11:43 mark of the period.  Andrej Sustr, deep in the Tigers' end, walked the puck to the side of the net and batted it in front to Dominic Zombo who fired in his first collegiate goal.  It was redemption for Zombo who had the game-tying goal waved off the night before.

The Tigers started well in the second period getting goals 1:10 apart from Alexander Krushelnyski and Jaden Schwartz in the first 1:42 of the stanza to take a 2-1 lead.

CC stretched the lead late in the period when Scott Winkler stole a pass in the UNO zone and set up David Civitarese at 18:41.

But with just six seconds remaining in the period, Jayson Megna walked down the right wing, shrugged off a hit from Guentzel and threw the puck in front.  Bryce Aneloski crashed the net and knocked in his sixth goal of the year.  Aneloski now has points in a team season-high nine games.

John Faulkner started the game for UNO and made 11 saves on 14 shots before being replaced at the start of the third period for Ryan Massa.  Massa stopped all 15 shots he faced in the third to earn the win and improve to 7-5-2.  Thorimbert made 29 saves as the Mavs outshot the Tigers, 34-29.

Sustr finished the night with three assists.

The Mavericks play their final four games of the regular season at home beginning with a series against Minnesota on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24 and 25.
