HOUGHTON, Mich. –
Ryan Massa made 35 saves for his first career shutout, backstopping the UNO Mavericks to a 4-0 win over Michigan Tech on Saturday night at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
The win helped the Mavericks break the tie with Michigan Tech for sixth place in the WCHA. The Mavs moved into a tie for fourth place with Colorado College after the Tigers and North Dakota both lost on Saturday night.
UNO is now 13-11-6 overall and 10-7-5 in the WCHA while Michigan Tech fell to 13-14-3 overall and 10-9-3 in the league. The win helped the Mavs snap a four-game winless streak.
The shutout was a dramatic reversal of fortune for Massa who was pulled on Friday after allowing two goals on four shots in just 5:15 of action.
Massa was particularly strong in the third period when the Huskies fired 18 shots on goal. His play helped the Mavs break the game open with three goals in the third period.
Matt White scored the second of his two goals on the night when he broke down the right wing and fired a wrist shot from the top of the circle that beat goalie Josh Robinson inside the far post. The goal was the 15th of the season for White, a new career high.
Jayson Megna stretched the lead to 3-0 when his long wrist shot from inside the blue line flew by Robinson for his 10th goal of the year.
Michael Young scored UNO's final goal when he kept a clearing attempt at the right point and fired a shot that was deflected by a Michigan Tech defender past Robinson for a shorthanded goal.
After a scoreless first period, the Mavericks took the lead at 6:54 of the second period.
Terry Broadhurst grabbed a loose puck in the UNO end and sent it up ice to
Jayson Megna. He fed White who got behind the defense and fired a wrist shot to the top corner past Robinson.
For winning the series, the Mavericks won the John MacInnes Trophy as Michigan Tech's Winter Carnival champions. White was named the MVP of the weekend.
The Mavericks stay on the road to face Colorado College on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17 and 18. They will be the final road games of the season for the Mavs.
