OMAHA, Neb. - The 13th-ranked UNO softball rolled to another conference sweep on Saturday, picking up 8-0 (5 inn.) and 3-1 wins over the Southwest Baptist Bearcats at Claussen-Westgate Field.
The Mavericks improved to 34-6 overall and 11-1 in the MIAA with the wins. The Bearcats dropped to 5-19 overall and 3-11 in conference play.
The Mavericks opened up game one with a five-run second inning to take control. UNO batted around, as three Mavs singled, one reached by error and four walked in the inning. #
Emma Wright and Ashley Lynch# hit RBI singles for UNO. The Mavs left the bases loaded but still led comfortably after two.
#
Lindsey Slocum added an RBI double in the fourth to score Katelyn Hinton# for a 6-0 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, #
Sarah Elliott# walked to lead off the inning, then Feichtinger doubled her home before #
Lauren Larson# singled home Feichtinger to end the game in the fifth by the eight-run rule, 8-0.
#
Beth Haley# was dominant in the circle in the win. Haley allowed just two hits and three walks while striking out five in earning her ninth shutout of the season.
In game two of the doubleheader, Southwest Baptist got to #
Dana Elsasser# early, scoring a run in the first inning on three hits and loading the bases with two outs. But Elsasser got catcher Alandria Jensen to ground out to first baseman #
Molly Negrete# to end the threat.
The Mavs got on the board with a two-out rally in the third inning. Feichtinger and Lynch walked, then Larson hit a grounder to short, but the throw went over the first baseman's head, allowing Feichtinger to score from third to tie the game at 1-1.
UNO claimed the lead in the fifth inning when Elliott started the inning off with a single to left for the Mavs' first hit of the game. Elliott stole second, then scored on a throwing error by the third baseman on a #
Molly Negrete# sacrifice bunt. Negrete later scored on a Lynch single plus a fielding error to make it 3-1.
After the first two SBU batters reached in the top of the seventh, Slocum came on in relief and closed out the win, highlighted by a double play to end the game in which Slocum fielded a grounder, threw to Negrete at first, who then threw to Larson at home to tag out SBU's Alandria Jensen to end the game.
UNO competes at the MIAA Crossover North next weekend in Kirksville, Mo. The Mavs will play five games in three days against MIAA opponents, starting with a 10 a.m. game against Washburn on Friday.
