Playoff Pairings Release
DULUTH, Minn. – The UNO Mavericks earned their best-ever conference finish, wrapping up their first regular season in the WCHA with a 5-2 win over the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs on Saturday night at AMSOIL Arena. #Terry Broadhurst# had two goals to lead the offense.
The Mavericks finish the season with a record of 21-13-2 and 17-9-2 in the WCHA which puts them in third place, just one point behind Denver
Minnesota Duluth finishes in fourth place with a mark of 20-9-6 overall and 15-8-5 in the WCHA.
The Mavericks will play Bemidji State in the first round of the WCHA playoffs next week at the Qwest Center. The games will be played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, if necessary, March 11-13. The Mavericks broke open a scoreless game early in the second period. Broadhurst tipped in a slap shot by #Andrej Sustr# at 1:04 for his ninth goal of the year.
Just 22 seconds later, #Brock Montpetit# doubled the lead. He took a pass from #Ryan Walters#. His first shot was stopped by goalie Kenny Reiter, but he was able to knock in the rebound to make it 2-0.
UMD got one goal back at 9:07 when Joe Basaraba beat #John Faulkner# with a rising wrist shot through traffic.
But the Mavericks restored the two-goal lead just 2:18 later when Alex Hudson fired the puck under Reiter for his 12th goal of the year.
UNO stretched its lead to 4-1 at 8:15 of the third when Matt Ambroz tipped in a shot by Eric Olimb for his team-leading 17th goal of the year. The powerplay tally also snapped an 0-for-16 skid with the man advantage.
The Bulldogs fought back again when Justin Fontaine tipped in a point shot to make it 4-2.
But Broadhurst picked up his second of the night to ice the game. Matt White slid a pass out of the right wing corner, and Broadhurst walked to the net, beating Reiter with a wrist shot for his 10th goal of the year.
Faulkner finished with 29 saves to earn his 20th win of the year, just one from tying Dan Ellis' school record for wins in a season. Reiter took the loss with 23 saves.
UNO's 21 overall wins tie the second-best win total in school history set by the 2000-01 team. Their 17 conference wins are a new school record. UNO's previous best conference finish was fourth place, a spot also earned by the 2000-01 team.
