OMAHA, Neb. - The No. 24 UNO softball team swept Upper Iowa on Wednesday in its home opener doubleheader, 3-0, 3-2, at Claussen-Westgate Field.
#
Beth Haley# sparked the Mavericks in game one with a no-hitter, the second of her career. In the second game, UNO rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the seventh to win on a walk-off RBI single by #
Sarah Elliott#.
With the wins, the Mavs moved to 21-5 on the season. The Peacocks fell to 4-19.
Playing in 40-degree temperatures with a strong wind, the Mavs mustered just three hits in the first game. Fortunately, Haley was on top of her game, pitching all seven innings and not allowing a hit. Haley let only two runners reach base, one by walk and one after an error. Haley didn't allow one ball to get out of the infield while improving to 8-3 on the season. The other no-hitter of her career came on April 13, 2010, against Northwest Missouri State.
#
Lindsey Slocum# got the Mavs on the board in the second inning with a solo home run, her seventh of the year. UNO added two more runs to pad the lead in the third inning on RBI singles by #
Katelyn Hinton and Molly Feichtinger#.
Upper Iowa came back strong in game two, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Hinton picked up a run for UNO with a sixth-inning lead-off homer.
In the bottom of the seventh with the Mavs trailing 2-1, Slocum drew a walk to open the inning and #
Jamie Nash replaced her as a pinch-runner. Nash stole second on the first pitch to Emma Wright#. Then Wright moved Nash over to third on a sacrifice bunt. #
Amber Lutmer# stepped in as a pinch-hitter and flied out deep to center field, scoring Nash easily to tie the game.
With two outs, #
Ashley Lynch# doubled to right field. Then Elliott played the hero, blooping a ball down the left field line to score Lynch for the winning run.
#
Dana Elsasser# picked up the win to improve to 7-1. Elsasser allowed five hits and zero unearned runs while striking out eight.
UNO opens MIAA play this Friday with a doubleheader at Fort Hays State. On Saturday, the Mavs travel east across Kansas to play Washburn in a doubleheader.
