OMAHA, Neb. – #John Faulkner# made 33 saves to earn his NCAA-leading sixth shutout of the year as the UNO Mavericks blanked the St. Cloud State Huskies, 3-0, on Friday night at the Qwest Center. The Mavericks scored all three goals in a 1:41 span of the second period to earn their second win against the Huskies this season.
UNO is now 15-10-2 overall and 11-6-2 in the WCHA, good for a tie for fourth place with idle Wisconsin. St. Cloud State fell to 11-13-3 and 7-10-2 in the league.
The Mavericks seized the lead in the second period with relentless efficiency. Eric Olimb started the scoring when he crashed the net, picked up the rebound of a shot by Rich Purslow and knocked in his second goal of the year. It was also his 21st point, a new career high.
Just 1:15 later, the Mavericks broke into the offensive zone with #Ryan Walters# leading the rush. He handed off to #Brock Montpetit# who fired a wrist shot over the glove hand of goalie Mike Lee.
UNO concluded the barrage 26 seconds later when Olimb slipped down the right wing, drew the St. Cloud defense and slid the puck to Matt Ambroz who fired the puck into an empty net to make it 3-0.
Faulkner was at his best in the third period when the Huskies fired 11 shots on goal and forced him to make several acrobatic saves.
Faulkner is now just one shutout away from tying the UNO record for career shutouts held by Dan Ellis.
At the other end of the ice, St. Cloud State's Mike Lee stopped 26 shots.
