ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The UNO hockey team clinched home ice for the first round of the WCHA playoffs with a 4-1 win over the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Saturday night at Sullivan Arena. The win gave the Mavericks a split of the two-game weekend series.
UNO improved to 19-10-2 overall and 15-7-2 in the WCHA. They are tied with Minnesota Duluth for third place in the standings with 32 points each.
Alaska Anchorage dipped to 11-16-3 and 10-14-2 in league play. The loss snapped a five-game home winning streak.
The Mavericks broke a scoreless tie early in the second period. Matt Ambroz fed Joey Martin who split the Seawolves' defensemen and beat goaltender Rob Gunderson with a hard shot for his 11th goal of the year, a new career high for goals in a season.
UNO doubled its lead with the two teams skating 4-on-4. Alex Hudson fed #Bryce Aneloski who walked down the slot and slipped a pass to Matt White# who fired home his 13th goal of the year to make it 2-0 UNO after two.
#Brock Montpetit# stretched the lead to three goals 52 seconds into the third when he spun out of the left-wing corner and roofed a shot over the shoulder of Gunderson for his 10th goal of the year.
The Seawolves ended #John Faulkner#'s shutout bid when Sean Wiles scored a powerplay goal halfway through the period. But #Johnnie Searfoss# fired a long shot into an empty net to clinch the win.
Faulkner stopped 29 of 30 shots while Gunderson made 14 saves as UNO was held to a season-low 18 shots on goal.
The Mavericks return to Qwest Center for their final home series of the regular season when they host Denver on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25 and 26.
