ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaska Anchorage got a goal midway through the third period to break a tie game and held on to beat the UNO hockey team, 3-2, on Friday night at Sullivan Arena.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Mavericks and dropped their record to 18-11-2 overall and 14-7-2 in the WCHA. The Mavs did not lose any ground in the standings, remaining in a tie for third place with Minnesota Duluth after the Bulldogs were beaten at Minnesota State.
The Seawolves improved to 11-15-3 overall and 10-13-2 in the WCHA. The two teams will finish their weekend series on Saturday night at 10:07 p.m. CT. Live coverage is available on KVNO, 90.7 FM.
On the inning goal, Brett Cameron brought the puck down the left wing and fired a shot on goal. The Mavericks couldn't control the rebound, and Daniel Naslund was able to poke home the puck for his second goal of the year.
UNO controlled play for most of the third period, energized when Alex Hudson scored his 11th of the year off a pass from Matt White at the one-minute mark. The goal had tied the game at two. The Mavs would outshoot the Seawolves, 11-4, in the third.
The Seawolves grabbed the first lead of the game just past the midway point of the first period. Jade Portwood stole the puck along the right-wing wall and fed Sean Wiles who beat goaltender #John Faulkner# with a wrist shot.
The Mavericks tied the game with a strong forecheck. Anchorage goaltender Rob Gunderson went behind his net to play the puck but gave it up to Joey Martin. Martin tucked the rebound into the vacated net to make it 1-1 after one. It was his 100th career point, making him the 12th Maverick to reach that mark all-time.
Alaska Anchorage seized the lead back at 6:31 of the second period when, off a cycle in the UNO zone, Alex Gellert found Tommy Grant with a rink-wide pass, and Grant fired home his team-leading 11th goal of the year.
Faulkner finished the game with 10 saves while Gunderson made 22 at the other end to earn the win.
