OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO Mavericks strengthened their hold on fourth place in the WCHA with a 4-1 win over the Wisconsin Badgers on Friday night at Qwest Center Omaha. The game was played in front of a crowd of 15,137, the largest to see a Maverick home game in school history.
With the win, the Mavericks improved to 17-10-2 on the season and 13-6-2 in the WCHA. In the process, they snapped the Badgers' five-game win streak. Wisconsin is now 19-9-3 and 11-8-2 in league play.
The two teams will square off again on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m. at Qwest Center.
The Mavericks trailed going into the second period but tied the game on a power play just 1:21 into the stanza. Joey Martin walked off the left wing wall and fired a shot past goaltender Scott Gudmandson for his 30th point of the season.
The Mavs took the lead just 2:22 later. Alex Hudson sent the puck ahead to #Johnnie Searfoss# who took a bad-angle shot. It broke off Gudmandson and tricked behind him. Searfoss curled the net, grabbed the puck and fired it home.
UNO stretched its lead to 3-1 when Hudson cut around a fallen defender and roared into the Wisconsin zone, beating Gudmandson with a backhander for an unassisted goal.
Rich Purslow iced the game with an empty net goal in the final minute.
Wisconsin took the lead at 14:54 of the first period when Mark Zengerle found Jordy Murray alone in the slot. He fired a shot past #John Faulkner# for his 15th goal of the season.
Faulkner made 31 saves to earn his career-high 16th win of the year while Gudmandson took the loss with 28 saves.
