GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Ryan Walters scored at 1:21 of overtime to give the UNO Mavericks a 2-1 win over North Dakota on Friday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena.  

The Mavericks improved to 9-7-3 overall and 7-3-3 in the WCHA.  The Fighting Sioux fell to 8-8-1 and 6-7-0 in league play.  The loss snapped UND's four-game win streak and gave the Mavericks their first back-to-back wins since late October.

On the winning goal, Michael Young blocked a shot by Corban Knight in the low slot and sent the puck to the right wing to Matt White.  White spotted Walters breaking up the right wing.  He fired a pass that sprung Walters behind the defensemen.  He cut across the slot before beating goalie Aaron Dell with a backhander for his sixth of the year.

The Mavericks played a solid road game, limiting UND to only four shots in the third period.  Three of those shots came after Carter Rowney had scored early in the third period to tie the game at 1-1.  UNO finished with a 35-25 shot advantage for the game.

The Mavericks broke the scoreless tie at 13:46 of the second period when Walters steered a pass to a streaking White.  He split the defense and got a shot on goalie Aaron Dell.  It popped up in the air and rolled off of Dell and into the net for White's ninth goal of the season.

It was UNO's first overtime win since beating Minnesota State by the same score on Dec. 19, 2009.  

John Faulkner, making his first start in three weeks, stopped 24 shots to earn his fifth win of the year.  Dell took the loss with 33 saves.

The two teams conclude the series on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m.  It will be UNO's last game until after the Christmas break when they host Quinnipiac on Dec. 30 and 31.
