Denver Turns Back Mavericks, 7-3

Box Score Box Score

DENVER, Colo. – The Denver Pioneers erupted for five goals in the second period to pull away from the UNO Mavericks, 7-3, on Friday night at Magness Arena.

The loss drops the Mavericks to 6-6-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the WCHA.  The Pioneers improve to 5-3-2 and 4-2-2 in league play.  The two teams will close the weekend series on Saturday night at 8:07 p.m. CT.

The Pioneers used an early power play to take the lead in the first minute of the game.  Nick Shore fired home his second goal of the year after just 56 seconds of action.

UNO tied the game less than four minutes later.  Josh Archibald scooped up the rebound of a point shot from Andrej Sustr and lifted the puck over Denver goalie Adam Murray.  The goal was his sixth of the year to lead all UNO rookies.

Denver retook the lead later when Shawn Ostrow took a pass from Omaha native Dustin Jackson and slid the puck under John Faulkner.

But the Mavs answered again, cashing in on their first power play of the game.  Off a face off, Mike Young's shot got to the goal line before being cleared by the DU defense.  The puck went right to Ryan Walters who fired home his third goal of the year to make it 2-2 after one.

The game got out of hand for the Mavericks in the second period.  The Pioneers got goals from Jarrod Mermis and Chris Knowlton just 1:53 apart to take a 4-2 lead.

The Mavericks responded when Matt White and Terry Broadhurst worked a give and go down the left wing.  Broadhurst finished it off by sliding the puck under Murray for this team-leading 12th goal of the year.

But Denver wasn't done.  Joey LaLeggia scored at 12:10, Drew Shore at 15:54 and Nick Shore got his second of the game at 17:30 to put DU up 7-3 after two.

The two teams played a physical but scoreless third period.

UNO finished with a 36-30 shot advantage.  The Mavericks have now outshot their opponents in all but one game this season.
