OMAHA, Neb. – The Colgate Raiders scored two second-period goals to beat the UNO hockey team 4-3 in the championship game of the Mutual of Omaha Stampede on Saturday.
The loss marked the first time the Mavericks had lost their season-opening tournament since 2006.
The Raiders struck just 1:46 into the game. While shorthanded, Chris Wagner raced down the right wing and swung the puck in front to Austin Smith who fired home his first goal of the year.
UNO evened the game less than three minutes later. Matt White raced down the right wing and found
Terry Broadhurst in front. He knocked in his first goal of the season past sprawling goaltender Eric Mihalik.
Just 31 seconds later, the Mavericks had the lead when
Josh Archibald stepped out from behind the Colgate net and tucked the puck between Mihalik and the post for his second goal in as many games.
Colgate evened the game in the final minute of the first. Matt Firman fed Nick Prockow who beat
John Faulkner with a backhander.
The Mavericks retook the lead on a power play at 2:21 of the second.
Bryce Aneloski fed Broadhurst for a one-timer that ricocheted in off the post for his second goal of the night.
Kurtis Bartliff knotted up the game again when he swatted a bouncing puck past Faulkner at 7:53.
Colgate got the deciding goal late in the second. The Mavericks got trapped in their own zone on a long shift, and Joe Wilson got free to convert a pass from Smith to make it 4-3.
The Mavericks outshot the Raiders 8-5 in the third period but could not net the equalizer.
The Mavericks head north next week to take part in the Brice Alaska Goal Rush hosted by Alaska. They'll open with Alaska Anchorage on Friday, Oct. 14 at 8:05 p.m. CT.
