FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Alaska got 31 saves from Scott Greenham and held off the UNO Mavericks 4-1 in the final game of the Brice Alaska Goal Rush on Saturday night.
The Mavericks lost both games in their first visit to Fairbanks in nearly two years. They dropped a 3-0 decision to Alaska Anchorage in Friday's opener.
Trailing 2-0 after two, the Mavericks pushed to get on the board to start the third period but had little luck.
Terry Broadhurst hit a crossbar early in the period, and
Jayson Megna hit a post minutes later.
The Nanooks stretched their lead to 3-0 on a fluky goal. Nolan Youngmun tried to pass across the slot but the puck hit a UNO defender and ricocheted in.
Terry Broadhurst finally ended UNO's weekend-long drought when he scored an unassisted powerplay goal at 12:20.
But less than a minute later, Colton Beck stole the puck and beat freshman goalie
Ryan Massa with a sharp wrister to give Alaska the 4-1 lead.
Greenham was at his best in the third when the Mavericks fired 15 shots his way.
The Nanooks grabbed the lead just over three minutes into the first period. Beck took a pass from Andy Taranto and got off a shot. Massa made the save, but Beck fought his way to the rebound and flipped it home for his third goal of the year.
Alaska doubled that lead just 52 seconds into the second period. While shorthanded, Nik Yaremchuk carried the puck out of his own zone to the UNO blue line before wiring a slap shot just under the crossbar for his team-leading fourth goal of the year.
The Mavericks return home to host Alaska Anchorage in their first WCHA games of the season. The two schools square off on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21 and 22 at CenturyLink Center Omaha.
