GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota scored four goals in the third period to erase a 1-0 deficit and beat the UNO Mavericks, 4-2 on Saturday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena. The Mavericks were whistled for seven straight penalties to close the game and had to settle for a split of the two-game series.
The Mavericks are now 13-9-2 overall and 10-6-2 in the WCHA while the second-ranked Fighting Sioux improved to 18-7-2 and 13-5-0 in the league. Each team won two games in the four-game season series.
After two scoreless periods, #Terry Broadhurst# broke the ice, stealing the puck from UND's Chay Genoway, racing down the right wing and firing a shorthanded goal past goaltender Aaron Dell for his seventh of the year at 4:10.
The Sioux tied the game when Evan Trupp blocked a shot and raced after the ricochet. He sped in alone and fired a shot over the shoulder of #John Faulkner#. Trupp had to break free from defenseman Michael Young who was called for hooking, giving the Sioux a power play.
Danny Kristo converted the ensuing man advantage to give UND its first lead of the weekend, 2-1.
The Sioux made it 3-1 when Jason Gregoire converted an odd-man rush with 1:55 to play, a play that resulted in another Maverick penalty.
UNO closed the gap to 3-2 when #Michael Young# scored his second of the weekend just 31 seconds after the Sioux had taken the two-goal lead. He fired a hard shot over the shoulder of Dell for what was also his second shorthanded goal of the weekend.
But Gregoire iced the game when he fired home his second of the game on the power play at 19:08 to make it 4-2.
Faulkner took the loss, making 23 saves as the Mavs were outshot, 27-21. Dell picked up the win with 19 saves.
The Fighting Sioux were 2-for-8 on the power play while UNO was 0-for-4. The Mavs had no power plays after the 2:41 mark of the second period.
The Mavericks return home to start a six-game home stand next weekend. They'll host Alabama-Huntsville in a non-conference series on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 28 and 29.
