OMAHA, Neb. – Matt Ambroz had a pair of goals as the UNO hockey team worked out a 2-2 tie with Bemidji State on Friday night at the Qwest Center. The Mavericks were playing their first home game in more than a month.
UNO is now 12-7-2 overall and 9-4-2 in the WCHA while the Beavers are 8-11-2 and 4-9-2 in league play.
The Beavers grabbed the lead at 6:14 of the first period when Radoslav Illo got free in front and fired a one-timer past #John Faulkner# for his third goal of the year.
UNO tied it later in the period. Rich Purslow broke down the left wing and feathered a pass to Matt Ambroz. He got hooked up by defenseman Dan McIntyre but still got off a shot that banked off sprawling goaltender Dan Bakala for his team-leading 11th goal of the year.
The Mavericks took their first lead of the game on a power play early in the second period. Purslow set up Ambroz in the slot. His shot ricocheted off a Bemidji State defender and past Bakala to make it 2-1.
The Beavers had just four shots in the second period but capitalized on the second. Ryan Cramer got behind the UNO defense and beat Faulkner with a backhander for his first goal of the year to tie the game after two.
The third period played out like a playoff game with each team managing 10 shots. UNO's best chance came when #Ryan Walters# rang a post in the final 10 minutes.
Faulkner finished with 24 saves while Bakala made 30 saves to improve to 2-0-1 against the Mavericks this season.
The two teams face off again on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m. from the Qwest Center.
