OMAHA, Neb. - In only his first season with the UNO hockey team, freshman forward #Terry Broadhurst# has already made an impression.  As the team leader in powerplay and game-winning goals, the Illinois native has proven to be a clutch performer.

“I have always been about putting in hard work,” said Broadhurst. “I believe that achievements are definitely the benefits of that, and its really starting to show around here at UNO.”

During his rookie season at UNO, Broadhurst has amassed 13 goals while dishing out 11 assists for 24 points on his way to earning a pair of CCM Central Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week honors.  Earlier this week, he was named to the CCHA's All-Rookie Team, the first Mav to crack that roster since Eddie DelGrosso in 2006-07.

Broadhurst has nine goals and nine assists in conference play for 18 points, tying him for fifth in freshman scoring.  He is tied for second among rookies with a pair of game-winning goals, twelfth overall, and is only one of two freshmen to pull out a hat trick in CCHA play this season.

“Again, it's the results of the coaches pushing us to work so hard the entire time, all the way through,” he said. “Playing with such good players around me has helped pay off for me as well.  It's nice to receive individual accomplishments but at the end of the day, I personally want to win the championship, not just for myself but for my guys.”

Broadhurst came to UNO through a traditional route, the United States Hockey League, the top tier for developing high school-aged players.  He skated for Sioux Falls from 2007-09, recording 34 goals and 47 assists for 81 points in 116 games. He also added four goals and two assists in seven playoff appearances and led all Stampede players last season with 27 goals and 31 assists in 60 games.

“When UNO started looking at me early on, it was definitely something that was intriguing,” Broadhurst said. “Knowing that the program has a lot of good guys around here was pretty big. When I considered the fact that guys from UNO have really succeeded in the USHL, it really made the decision easy for me. When the talent is already there, it definitely shows through the efforts of the coaching staff.”

The work ethic of UNO head hockey coach Dean Blais has been manifested through the effort and improvement of his players. Now ranked 18th in the nation by the USCHO.com Division-I Hockey Poll, the Mavericks will take aim at a return to Joe Louis Arena in Detroit for the CCHA semifinals as they play 13th ranked Ferris State this weekend.  The best-of-three series begins Friday, March 12 at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

UNO lost two regular season meetings at Ferris State, 2-0 and 3-1, back in December.

“I really don't have words to describe the feeling that I would get from being able to win the championship in my rookie season,” he said. “I think we all believe that we can win this weekend and in the locker room, we have such great team character and charisma. The coaches have definitely prepared us through all of the hard work.”

The young rookie said he knows how important it is to go out there and compete the way his team is capable of and the rest should take care of itself.

“We definitely remember those two losses; it's not something we were happy about,” he said. “Going up there that first time, we didn't play well.  But we're a different team now.  We know they're a good hockey team, but we know what we're capable of. If we just go up there and play our game, I really believe that anything can happen.”
