OMAHA, Neb. – Senior #Dan Swanson# broke open a close game with two quick goals in the third period to help the UNO hockey team beat the Michigan Wolverines 4-1 on Saturday night at Qwest Center Omaha. The Mavericks earned their first ever two-game sweep of the Wolverines and took over sole possession of fourth place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
The Mavericks are now 16-12-6 on the season and 12-11-3-2 in the CCHA. They conclude the CCHA regular season schedule next weekend when they visit #1 Miami on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19 and 20. Game time is 6:35 p.m. CT on Friday and 6:05 p.m. CT on Saturday from Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio.
With the Mavs leading 2-0 in the third period, Swanson took a pass from #JJ Koehler# and rifled a shot just under the crossbar behind Michigan goalie Bryan Hogan.
Just 23 seconds later, Swanson got free and dangled around a fallen Michigan defender before squeezing a wrist shot between Hogan and the post for his fifth goal of the season.
Michigan spoiled #John Faulkner#'s shutout bid when Louie Caporusso scored with less than three and a half minutes to go in the third period.
UNO opened the scoring on its third power play of the game. #Terry Broadhurst brought the puck down the right wing and dished to Nick Fanto#. He slid a pass across to #John Kemp# who one-timed a shot past Hogan at 16:51.
The Mavericks held off a stiff challenge from the Wolverines to start the second period and responded later in the stanza. #Brandon Richardson fed the puck from behind the net to Jordan Willert# who whipped home his first goal of the year.
Coming into the weekend, the Mavericks' seniors had never beaten Michigan but did so twice in 24 hours after earning a 4-3 victory on Friday.
Faulkner finished the game with 36 saves to earn his 12th win of the year while Hogan stopped 24 in the losing effort.
