Mavericks Burn Tigers For Stampede Title

OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO Mavericks scored three goals in the third period to come from behind for a 5-3 win over the RIT Tigers to win the Mutual of Omaha Stampede, the Mavericks' season-opening tournament.

#Matt Ambroz# was named the tournament MVP, scoring three goals and two assists on the weekend. 

Trailing 3-2 entering the third, #Alex Hudson tied the game when he knocked in the rebound of a shot by Rich Purslow# on a power play at 6:54.

#Joey Martin# then gave UNO its first lead of the night when his shot from the slot was deflected and fluttered over goalie Josh Watson during yet another power play.

Purslow added an empty net goal with 40 seconds left to ice the game.

RIT opened the scoring at 8:55 when Andrew Favot slipped a bad-angle shot through the legs of UNO's #John Faulkner# for his first goal of the year.

The Tigers doubled their lead in the last minute of the first.  Mike Janda slid a low shot under Faulkner's outstretched pad to put his team up 2-0 after one.

UNO battled back in the second period.  #Terry Broadhurst# took a long pass from Ambroz, broke around the defense and slipped a shot past Watson at 7:03.

The Mavericks tied the game on the power play when Ambroz set up behind the RIT net and backhanded a shot off the skate of a defender.  The puck fluttered over the shoulder of Watson for Ambroz's team-leading third goal of the year.

The Tigers retook the lead late in the period when Tyler Brenner crashed the net and knocked in the rebound of a shot by Favot to make it 3-2 RIT after two.

UNO had three powerplay goals in six chances while holding RIT without a goal on three chances including a five-on-three advantage for 1:54 while the game was tied at three.

Ambroz and RIT's Favot and Adam Hartley were named to the all-tournament team for forwards while #Eric Olimb# and Clarkson's Bryan Rufenach were all-tournament defense.  Faulkner was the all-tournament goalie.

The Mavericks open WCHA play next weekend when they visit Minnesota for games on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 15 and 16.
