ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Michigan Wolverines got off to a quick start, scoring just eight seconds into the game, and beat the UNO hockey team, 6 -1, on Saturday night at Yost Ice Arena. It was the Mavericks' first loss of the season as they earned a split of the two-game weekend series.
The Mavs are now 5-1-0 overall. They will have a week off before returning to the ice of the Qwest Center to host their first WCHA home series when Minnesota State comes to Omaha on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5 and 6. Game time is 7:37 p.m. on Friday and 7:07 p.m. on Saturday.
The Wolverines quick start came off the opening face-off. David Wohlberg got free down the left wing and rifled a shot over the shoulder of #John Faulkner# for his second goal of the series and third of the year.
Michigan took a commanding lead in the first 10 minutes of the second period. Carl Hagelin fired a shot through traffic that beat Faulkner just 55 seconds into the period. Scooter Vaughan scored a goal at 3:40 and another at the 10-minute mark to put the Wolverines up, 4-0.
Michigan got into penalty trouble later in the period, and the Mavericks finally broke through while skating four-on-three. #Matt Ambroz# hit the post with his shot, but #Alex Hudson# scooped up the rebound and fired home his fourth goal of the year.
Michigan iced the game with a pair of third period goals.
Faulkner took the loss, surrendering three goals on 18 shots. He was pulled after Vaughan's first goal. Fredrik Bergman played his first college game in relief, stopping 14 shots and allowing three goals.
