OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO hockey team got two goals from freshman Matt White to beat the University of British Columbia, 6-1 in an exhibition game on Saturday night at the Qwest Center. The game is the Mavericks' one tune-up before regular season action begins next week.
The Mavericks broke on top at 11:45 of the first period when Bryce Aneloski wired a shot past UBC goalie Jordan White. #Alex Hudson and Matt Ambroz# earned the assists.
White sandwiched a pair of goals around a tally by UBC's Wyatt Hamilton to put UNO up 3-1 after two. #Joey Martin# forced the puck away from Thunderbirds' defenseman Matt Pepe. White scooped up the puck and beat goalie Jordan White with a hard wrist shot to make it 2-0.
Late in the second, the Mavs took advantage of their third power play of the game. White took the rebound of a shot by #Terry Broadhurst# and knocked the puck in at 18:48.
The Mavericks added goals from Hudson, #Zahn Raubenheimer and Rich Purslow# to pull away in the third period. They outshot the Thunderbirds, 16-5 in the third period and 35-19 for the game.
#John Faulkner# picked up the win in only 20 minutes of work. He stopped all eight shots he faced. Mike Taffe surrendered UBC's only goal on six shots in the second period. #Fredrik Bergman# worked the third period, stopping all five shots.
The Mavericks will host the Mutual of Omaha Stampede on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8 and 9 at Qwest Center Omaha. The Mavs will begin their season-opening tournament against Clarkson on Friday at 7:37 p.m.
