Box Score MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The UNO hockey team made an emphatic debut in the WCHA, finishing off a two-game sweep of Minnesota with a 4-2 win on Saturday night at Mariucci Arena. #Terry Broadhurst and Eric Olimb# each had a pair of assists in the win.
With the win, the Mavericks are 4-0-0 on the year and 2-0-0 in the WCHA.
For the second straight night, the Mavericks jumped out to an early lead. Matt White scooped up the rebound of a shot by #Joey Martin# and buried his fourth goal of the season at 3:10 of the first period.
UNO doubled its lead later in the period off a good cycle in the Minnesota zone. Broadhurst got off a shot during a scramble in the slot. He was stopped, but Zahn Raubenheimer whipped home the loose puck on the backhand to make it 2-0 after one.
The Mavs padded their lead in the second. Off a face-off, #Matt Ambroz# scooped up the rebound of a shot by Broadhurst and slipped it past goalie Alex Kangas for his team-leading fifth goal of the year.
The Gophers, as they had done the night before, attempted a comeback when Kevin Wehrs scored off a slapshot, and former Omaha Lancer Erik Haula scored his first collegiate goal in the third period.
But #Rich Purslow# fired the puck into an empty net as the Gophers pushed for the equalizer to conclude the scoring and guarantee the Mavs the sweep.
#John Faulkner# made 29 saves to improve to 4-0-0.
The Mavericks will step out of conference play to face an old CCHA foe, Michigan, on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 22 and 23. Game time is 6:35 p.m. CT from Yost Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich.
