SOUTH BEND, Ind. – UNO scored two third-period goals but fell short in its comeback bid, losing 3-2 to Notre Dame on Saturday night at the Joyce Center. #Terry Broadhurst and Rich Purslow# scored goals in the final six minutes of the third period but the Mavericks could not net the equalizer and got a split of the two-game series.
The Mavericks are now 13-12-5 on the season and 9-11-2-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. They return home for the first of two straight weekends at Qwest Center Omaha. They'll host Ohio State on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 5 and 6.
The Mavs started their comeback bid with 5:49 remaining. #John Kemp# sent the puck in front to Broadhurst who snapped a quick shot past Notre Dame goalie Mike Johnson.
Then with goalie #John Faulkner# pulled for an extra attacker, Purslow took a pass from #Eric Olimb# and lifted a nifty backhander past Johnson to make it 3-2 with 26 seconds remaining.
The Mavericks buzzed the Notre Dame net in the waning seconds but were held at bay.
The Fighting Irish earned a 2-0 lead after the first period on an even-strength goal by Calle Ridderwall and a powerplay goal by Nick Larson. Both goals came in the first 10:30 of the period.
The Irish added to their lead at 8:25 of the second period when defenseman Sean Lorenz took a deflected pass and snapped a hard wrist shot under the crossbar for his second goal of the season.
Faulkner finished with 23 saves while Johnson picked up the win with 32 stops.
