SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The UNO hockey team earned its first win at Notre Dame in five years, beating the Fighting Irish 5-3 on Friday night at the Joyce Center. #Jeric Agosta# had two goals and assist as the Mavericks won their third straight game.
With the win, the Mavericks improve to 13-11-5 on the year and 9-10-2-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, good for sixth place. Notre Dame falls to 11-11-7 overall and 7-8-6-2 in the CCHA, now one point behind the Mavericks.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. CT, and the game will be televised on CBS College Sports.
With UNO leading 3-2 in the third period, Agosta delivered the eventual game-winner when he cut through two Notre Dame defensemen and threw a backhand shot past goalie Mike Johnson. It was his team-leading 13th goal of the year.
#John Kemp# finished off a three-point night by scoring into an empty net to make it 5-2. Notre Dame completed the scoring with a powerplay goal from defenseman Brett Blachford with Johnson pulled for an extra attacker.
The Irish opened the scoring just seven seconds into their first power play of the game. Ben Ryan wristed a shot over the shoulder of #Jeremie Dupont#, who was screened on the play, at 15:18 of the first period.
UNO tied the game early in the second period when Agosta converted a netmouth scramble off assists from #Dan Swanson and Kyle Ensign#.
After Notre Dame retook the lead on a goal by Kyle Palmieri, the Mavericks knocked in back-to-back goals before the intermission. #Matt Ambroz# got behind the defense and snapped home a powerplay tally at 8:13 to tie the game at two.
Swanson then put the Mavs ahead when he flipped the puck past Johnson at 17:07. UNO had a 3-2 lead after two.
Dupont improved to 4-3-1 on the year after making 31 saves. Johnson made 29 saves in the loss and is now 8-7-4.
The win was the first for the Mavericks in South Bend since Feb. 5, 2005 when they beat the Fighting Irish, 6-3. None of the current Mavs was on the team at that time.
