OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO hockey team got two goals apiece from #Alex Hudson and Nick Fanto# to beat the Northern Michigan Wildcats, 5-3, on Saturday night at Qwest Center Omaha.  With the win, the Mavericks earned the sweep of the two-game weekend series and strengthened their hold on eighth place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings.

Fanto broke a 3-3 tie with less than two and a half minutes remaining when he eluded the Wildcat defense and backhanded the puck past sprawling goalie Brian Stewart for his seventh goal of the year.

Fanto added an empty net goal with less than 30 seconds remaining to ice the game.

The Mavericks will travel to Notre Dame next weekend for games against the Fighting Irish on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 29 and 30.  Both games start at 7:05 p.m. CT and can be seen on CBS College.

UNO had a 3-2 lead going into the third period but Northern Michigan tied it when Andrew Cherniwchan converted a slick pass from Justin Florek at 8:57.

Like their 7-2 win against Northern on Friday, UNO got off to another strong start in the encore.  #Brandon Richardson# got loose at center ice and fed Hudson with a pass.  He walked in and beat Stewart with a low wrist shot for his seventh goal of the year.

The Mavericks doubled their lead on their first power play of the game.  Hudson brought the puck down the left wing and dropped a pass back to #John Kemp#.  He walked around the defense and slipped a shot past Stewart to make it 2-0 after one.

Northern got on the board early in the second when Greger Hanson knocked in the puck off a netmouth scramble.

UNO responded with its second powerplay goal of the game.  Hudson bulled his way to the net and knocked in the rebound of his own shot to make it 3-1.

But the Wildcats closed to within a goal again when Cherniwchan tipped in a pass from Kyle Follmer to make it 3-2 after two.

With the two goals, Fanto set a new career mark for goals in a season.  For Hudson, it was his fifth career two-goal game.

Goalie #John Faulkner# earned two assists in the game and made 24 saves to pick up his ninth win of the year.  Stewart took the loss for the second straight night with 26 saves.
