WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The UNO softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Central Missouri before bouncing back for a 10-4 win over the Jennies in doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon at Jennies Field. With the split, the Mavericks are now 39-12 on the season and 13-5 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
UNO returns to the diamond on Monday, April 27 at Missouri Southern for its final two games of the MIAA regular season schedule.
Game 1
Central Missouri's Megan Leonard held the Mavericks to just two hits in a 2-1 win for the hosts in the first game of the doubleheader. The Jennies got both of their runs in the third inning and then held the Mavs at bay.
Jessie Shelman led off the third with a double and scored on a throwing error later in the inning to make it 1-0. Tracey Anderson then scored when Kelli Kurka hit into a fielder's choice just one at-bat later. Anderson had reached base via a walk.
The Mavs scored their run in the top of the fifth when #Ashley Lynch walked and then came around to score on a double by Treightin Yates#.
#Melissa Negrete# took the loss on the mound for UNO. She pitched six innings and gave up both runs, one earned, on five hits. She also struck out four and walked two.
Game 2
#Jenna Dell# powered the Mavericks' offense in game two. She hit a grand slam and finished the game with five runs batted in as UNO won, 10-4. After just two hits in game one, the Mavs had 13 in the nightcap and took advantage of six Central Missouri errors.
UNO spotted the Jennies a 3-0 lead after two innings but struck back for two in the top of the third. Dell's big blast came in the fourth. Lynch walked and #Molly Feichtinger and Lindsey Slocum# both singled to load the bases. Dell then cranked a drive to left center field to put the Mavericks up, 6-3. Dell is now tied with #Katelyn Hinton# for the team home run lead with seven.
Dell earned her fifth RBI in the fifth inning when she was hit by a pitch with the bases load. In all, the Mavs pushed across four runs in the inning.
Slocum started the game for the Mavs but lasted just two and two-thirds of an inning. She allowed three of the Jennies' runs on seven hits. She also struck out three. #Beth Haley# picked up the win in relief, pitching four and a third innings and allowing just three hits and one run. She is now 11-4 on the year.
